Gedit is the default text editor for ubuntu, gnome desktop. But not only gedit is a text editor, so
we can use as code editor. Gedit has several plugins that can be added to transform it into an IDE to your liking
To install all official plugins we can do in ubuntu, the folowing way:
$ sudo apt-get install gedit-plugins
To install one of these plugins, you need to download the files and put it in / .local /.share /.gedit / plugins. They have to be in that exact directory.
Another way is to install plugins from the terminal
</p> <p>$ sudo apt-get install gedit gedit-plugins<br /> $ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-on-rails/ppa<br /> $ sudo apt-get update<br /> $ sudo apt-get install gedit-gmate</p> <p>
With these packages installed, we can proceed to customize Gedit, we’ll go to Edit> Preferences on the View tab and mark the options to show the line numbers and highlight the current line. The rest is left as is.
We go to the Editor tab and tabs width should be number 8, we change the number of spaces that our programming language required, for example you can put 4 which is the most conventional. On this same tab, leave everything as it is and mark the Auto-Save documents, with a margin of 5 minutes:
Then, we go to the Fonts and Colors tab and choose the ones you like to Editor:
Now we go to Accessories and mark those who want to have active. I recommend having activated the following:
Insert Date / Time
List of Tags
Pair Character Completio
File Browser Panel
If you are using RoR and / or Ruby, Rails File Loader
Gedit As you see it becomes a perfect code editor as well as being a very good text editor, it’s fast and lightweight
Gedit for me is the best text editor and is the one I use to write my posts, for me it is essential
Another important feature is the correct spelling, which in case you want to add some other language than the one we normally use, only write in terminal
$ sudo apt-get install aspell-es
where we change “es” for the language that we want install, restart gedit, let’s tool-set and choose the language you want
and autocomplete words, an excellent set for plugin developers but we can use it to write
Gedit can also install Windows, so people do not have Ubuntu can also enjoy this magnificent editor.
